Maddie Shaw is 21 years old  from near Northallerton in North Yorkshire. She is a dedicated and ambitious dressage rider who has a yard of horses ranging from young horses to horses in competition to retired golden oldies! She is also a freelance hairdresser, which helps fund her riding career and also finds the time to enjoy coaching riders of all levels. She started her equestrian career at the age of 3, showing her grandmothers homebred Dartmoor ponies winning nearly every show she went to in M&M and Best ridden classes. At the age of 12 she decided she wanted to take up eventing, following her mothers footsteps. Gone of the days that jumping could win this competition so she was put onto a Welsh Sec B 14 year old pony that they had in a field with the mares to learn how to do dressage. She was amazed when she won her first competition with 70%, bearing in mind this pony had never cantered till 2 weeks prior to this.
These beginnings went to bigger things when she was winning many championships, charity competitions, BYRDS competitions, Trailblazers etc. She also had the privilege of representing GB in 2008 in Necarne, finishing team bronze and individual 6th. Maddie was then to big for her little 13.2, so her Grandad bought a 16.2 8 year old Dutch Warmblood, Titus IV. With him she has recently been on the Tyne and Wear team at the Northern Region competition, where they finished 6th out of 30. She has won many affiliated competitions and won the Petplan Equine Elementary Open at Holmside Hall qualifying for Hartpury last April where they came 24th out nearly 80 competitors.
Maddie has recently been graded as a Para rider as she is a sufferer of CRPS, which she was diagnosed with after a fall 2 years ago. Within her short time of being a Para rider she has won the individual title at the Para Festival in March and has also represented the Northern region and England at the BYRDS Home International in Wales finishing 5th. Her ambitions are to climb the levels, take part in Para competitions, hoping to go to the 2* International at Bishop Burton College, go to High Profile Shows and to bring out her string of exciting young prospects, her favourite being one that is by Carl Hesters stallion Negretto (that sadly passed a few years ago).

Maddie is self taught and has learnt techniques by going to National Conventions to watch riders such as Anky Van Grunsven, Hubertus Schmidt and Adelinde Cornellison. Maddie also goes to clinics with many top riders and then puts what she has learnt from a 45 minute session into practise, likewise with training camps, having lessons with inspiring people such as Nikki Crisp and Rhett Bird. Maddie also works closely with Centaur Biomechanics at these camps to work on her position due to her disease which always proves very worthwhile.
CRPS/RSD
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a poorly understood condition in which a person experiences persistent severe and debilitating pain.
Although most cases of CRPS are triggered by an injury, the resulting pain is much more severe and long-lasting than normal.
The pain is usually confined to one limb, but it can sometimes spread to other parts of the body.
The skin of the affected body part can become so sensitive that just a slight touch, bump or even a change in temperature can provoke intense pain.
Affected areas can also become swollen, stiff or undergo fluctuating changes in colour or temperature.
Many cases of CRPS gradually improve to some degree over time, or get completely better. However, some cases of CRPS never go away, and the affected person will experience pain for many years.
